History of the National Library of Uzbekistan named after Alisher Navoi in Tashkent
The National Library after Alisher Navoi was instituted in 1870 as the Tashkent Public Library. The Ministry of Public Education, the Academy of Sciences, the Public Library, the Geographical Society and the General Staff of Russia, which donated doublet publications from their book storages, provided the assistance in organizing the library fund. By May 1870, more than 2,200 volumes (1,200 titles) had been collected. They made up the book core of the future library.
The National Library of Uzbekistan was supposed to collect and store literature on various branches of knowledge, primarily related to the country and neighboring states. The National Library of Uzbekistan gained the status of "state" in 1920. From this time, the library receives obligatory copies of all publications issued in the territory of the Turkestan Territory. In 1925 its fund amounted to 140 thousand units of storage.
During the Great Patriotic War, Russian academicians, corresponding members, writers, artists, folk artists and many others evacuated to Tashkent worked in the halls of the National Library of Uzbekistan. After the war, the main goal of the library was to replenish book collections. Books from Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia began to arrive. Friendly relations were established with libraries of the UK, the USA, France, Germany, Japan, and others.
In 1948, the National Library of Uzbekistan was named after the great Uzbek poet and thinker Alisher Navoi and a new three-storey building with reading halls for 350 seats was opened. Then, a section of rare and ancient editions was organized, in which 2 thousand books were collected, including 250 books with autographs, 151 - with ex-libris. Today this fund has over 16 thousand copies.

In 2011, a new library building with a total area of 38,000 square meters was built. Alisher Navoi National Library of Uzbekistan includes 13 reading rooms, an Internet and media center, an exhibition hall, a book museum, a children's room, a book room, a cinema center, recreation areas and a cafeteria.
Today, the National Library of Uzbekistan named after Alisher Navoi is upgraded with high tech equipment and electronic means of manuscripts, books and other printed publications of the funds of the book depository.
The National Library of Uzbekistan has an automated department for ordering, as well as accounting issued-handed books. The order can be made from any room where there is a similar electronic library system. The "delivery" is carried out within 10-15 minutes with the help of special tele-lift for the delivery of books from the vaults that are in the basement. The library holds 6.5 million publications, of which rare valuable specimens are 200,000. 16,000 examples are rare editions.
