Landmark of Nukus
National Museum of Local History of Karakalpakstan is one of the oldest museums in the whole of Central Asia. It is located in the capital of republic in Nukus city. History of the museum has about 80 years, and its exposure is truly unique and interesting parts of national inheritance.
Now the museum has over 56,000 exhibits, some of which are valuable and rare. Exhibits are constantly replenished, thanks to archaeological excavations, as well as co-operation with universities and academies.
In total there are 21 museum halls, they are divided by sectors: nature, archeology, ethnography and modern history of the region that are very popular and reflect of the flora and fauna of the country.
Department of Archaeology contains models of ancient settlements and objects found during the excavations. There is also an exposition of folk artists, embroidered, woven carpets, jewelry, musical instruments, etc.
Paleontological Museum is a repository of unique collections of different groups of fossil fauna. These are the objects where you can observe the sequence of formation of rocks and examine organic forms preserved in fossils of ancient stones.
During the 80-year existence of the museum, it gathered a collection, numbering about 100 000 items.
Funds of the museum present several collections such as numismatic, paleontological, ethnographic, archaeological works, rare books, documentaries, etc. In collection there are many rare paintings, sculptures, medals, weapons and more. Today, the museum maintains valuable artifacts that reflect the history of the region.
It is leading and oldest museum, the center of scientific research, local history and methodological work in the area, in present-day this museum has become the hallmark of the region. Here accumulates objective and reliable information about the nature and history of the region.
