Isteza Madrasah or Khoja Muhammad Nabi Madrasah of Bukhara was founded by a resident of the quarter Oy Binok, originating from Denau, a wealthy landowner and merchant of carpets he brought from Karshi.

Having quarreled with his sons, he bequeathed to turn his house into a madrasah, and formalized it as a waqf. Panging with sons, he regretted what he had done and wanted to change his decision, however, due to the fact that by law the property turned into a waqf, could not become someone else’s property again. His efforts in this case remained unsuccessful and the house turned into a madrasah - a hostel for students.

In memory of this story, madrasah got the ironic name “madrasah pushaymon” - “madrasah of repentance” or “madrasah istezo” - “madrasah of annoyance”.

The date of construction of Isteza madrasah in Bukhara is 1909.

Isteza Madrasah is the smallest madrasah in Central Asia; it has only 20 cells. Thanks to the restoration, this ancient building received a rebirth and opened its doors wide in a new capacity. In 1998 the French cultural center "Isteza" was opened. In a tourist city, where there is a great need for learning foreign languages, a similar cultural center is a real island of this European country in ancient Bukhara.

The beginning of the restoration work was preceded by searches in the archives, attracting the best archaeologists and experienced craftsmen and restorers. The tandem of the two enthusiastic architects, from France, Philippe Barbier, and from the Uzbek side, Zoirsho Klychev, proved fruitful.

During the Uzbekistan tours from the company Peopletravel, you have a unique opportunity to visit Isteza Madrasah in Bukhara.
