Goziyon madrasah in Bukhara
In the center of Bukhara, on the territory of the ancient Goziyon quarter the Madrasah Goziyon is located. The madrasah was built in the XV-XVII centuries. The Madrasah Goziyon itself is called just like the block – Goziyon. “Goziyon ” means "a fighter for faith." The quarter was named in honor of Imam Gozi. He was one "of forty martyrs for the faith", and was buried in Bukhara.
In the XVIII-XIX centuries, the Madrasah Goziyon in Bukhara was one of the leading Muslim educational institutions that hosted students from all over Central Asia. But in the early 20th century, when the Bolsheviks came to power, the madrasah was closed, and today it is only an architectural monument, which is included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
The architecture of the madrasah fully corresponds to the canons of Bukhara architecture of the 16th-17th centuries. This is a symmetrical one-story building with an arched portal, decorated with ornaments and marble inserts. The Madrasah Goziyon looks stern and majestic. There is no atmosphere of celebration, but there is a sense of harmony, simplicity and perfection. The furniture of the Goziyon Madrasah is made in bright colors. Under the portal is a beautiful carved avian (summerhouse). It is supposedly carved from ivory.
But first of all, the Goziyon Madrasah of Bukhara is attractive because of its historical significance for the inhabitants of Bukhara. Today in the memory of the people it remains a symbol of enlightenment.
In medieval Uzbekistan, so much attention was paid to teaching that even the accommodation facilities for students were like palaces.
