Samarkand railway station
The railway communication in Uzbekistan is quite developed; and Samarkand train station is one of the most significant and largest passenger-freight stations belonging to the Bukhara branch. This train station is situated in the north-west of the city.
At the turn of the XIX century, when Uzbekistan as the Turkestan province was a part of the Russian Empire, the construction engineering of railways was actively conducted. Samarkand, then was in dire need of new transport connections. In May of the year 1888, a railway bridge crossing the Amu-Darya River was built and Samarkand became one of the points on the new Transcaspian railway.
So in 1888, the first building of the Samarkand train station was erected here. Since then, it was reconstructed and altered dozens of times. The modern appearance of the building was given in the early 80s of the 20th century. Then the same building was repaired and altered already - first in 2000, then 10 years later, in 2010.
At the dawn of the 21st century, the “Registan” train began to run here. Its main purpose is to transport passengers between the cities. This train moves at maximum power at a speed of 160 km / h. The year 2011 was marked for the Uzbekistan Railways by a remarkable event: the first high-speed railway was opened on the territory of Central Asia along the same route Tashkent-Samarkand. Here, the latest model of the train “Afrosiyob” runs. This miracle of technology has the ability to reach the speed up to 250 km / h. In September 2016 this high-speed railway was prolonged to Bukhara.
